Crochet Toucan Amigurumi – Free Pattern

Add Tulley the Toucan to your amigurumi collection with this free pattern! Tulley is part of The Rainbow Collection. This pattern is easy to follow in a clear table format. Pictures have been included for clarity, along with clear descriptions. Below are links to the other two cuties in The Rainbow Collection.

I have always loved toucans (and not just because I grew up on Fruit Loops). I’m definitely a rainbow girl, and if you’ve seen some of my work you’ll definitely agree with that. My 2 year old daughter is also a huge fan of rainbows, and that’s what started this entire collection. As soon as I came up with the idea to make rainbow belly amigurumi, I knew I would be creating a toucan.

I hope you enjoy this pattern as much as I enjoyed creating it. Maybe Tulley will bring a bit of joy to a little one in your life. I know my daughters will have fun playing with her.

Beak:

To be worked in continuous round, I used white, pink, apricot, and lavender yarn and 3.5mm crochet hook.

RoundInstructionssts
1Begin with lavender yarn. sc 4 in a mr4
2inc in each st around8
3(1sc, inc)*412
4(2sc, inc)*416

8-9Change to pink yarn. sc in each st around for 2 rounds 20
10-15Change to white yarn. sc in each st around for 6 rounds. Stuff with polyfil. FO, leaving long tail. 20

Do an invisible colour change when changing colours on the beak. With the hook in the last loop of the lavender yarn, yarn over, then pull through a loop of lavender yarn. Sl st into next loop and then begin sc with apricot yarn in each st around. Tie together the apricot and lavender yarn tails. Do this with each colour change.

Wings:

Make 2. To be worked in continuous round, I used turquoise yarn and 3.5mm crochet hook.

RoundInstructionssts
14sc in mr4

17-18sc in each st around for 2 rounds, stuff lightly with polyfil.12
19(1sc, dec)*4, close ring, FO, leaving long tail8

Make 2 wings, lightly stuff them, so they aren’t too bulky.

RoundInstructionssts
16sc in mr6
2inc in each st around12
3-4sc in each st around for 2 rounds12
56dec around, stuff foot.6
6-15sc in each st around for 10 rounds, close ring, FO, leaving long tail.6

Stuff the feet, but not the legs.

Tail Feathers:

To be worked in continuous round, I used turquoise yarn and 3.5mm crochet hook.

RoundInstructionssts
16sc in mr6
2(1sc, inc)*39
3sc in each st, FO9
Repeat rounds 1 through 3 to form second section of tail feathers. Do not FO
4Join second tail feather to first. Sl stitch the two sections together, then sc around, joining the two sections completely to make 18 sts.18
5-10sc in each st around for 6 rounds18
11(1sc, dec)*612
12-14sc in each st around for 3 rounds, stuff lightly12
156dec around, close ring, FO, leaving long tail.

When joining the two tail feather sections, you may need to add a sc in the joint on either side to make sure you end up with 18sts.

Rainbow Belly:

I used the Capri yarn in white, lavender, apricot, and pink, acrylic yarn in yellow and orange and a 3.0mm crochet hook. The first chain of each ring counts as a stitch. Attach next color to the top of the chain in the previous ring. I chose these colours to go with the beak, but feel free to use whatever colors you prefer!

RoundInstructionssts
1 – Whitein mr ch 2 and make 7hdc, FO, but leave as a semi circle8
2 – Lavenderattach lavender yarn (see note above), ch 2, 6hdc inc, hdc, FO14
3 – Yellowattach yellow yarn, ch 2, (1hdc, hdc inc)*6, hdc, FO20
4 – Orangeattach orange yarn, ch 2, (2hdc, hdc inc)*6, hdc, FO26
5 – Apricotattach apricot yarn, ch 2, (3hdc, hdc inc)*6, hdc, FO32
6 – Pinkattach pink yarn, ch 1, (4sc, inc)*6, sc, FO38
7 – Whiteattach white yarn, ch 1, sc in each st around (38), then sc evenly across the bottom to form a clean border. I did 20 sts across the bottom, approximately 10 per side of the rainbow. slst to first st, FO and leave long tail.58

Form sc evenly across the bottom of the rainbow. A good rule of thumb is 1 st for each sc row and 2 for hdc rows. I did 20 sc, approximately 10 on each side of mr. Typically you would add 3 sc to go around each corner, but I didn’t do this because I wanted the rainbow to curve around the toucan’s body.

Assembly

Gather all the parts, along with a tapestry needle and some stitch markers or safety pins.

Pin the rainbow belly in place, in the middle of your toucan. I lined the center of the rainbow up with the middle of the head (between the eyes), just above the BLO round.

Stitch the beak between the eyes. My beak spanned from rounds 7-15.

Attach the wings just under the head. I attached mine between rounds 21 and 22, with 6 sts between them on the back. I attached my wings so that the tips pointed towards the back of the bird. I attached them so that they can easily be moved around when played with, but you can stitch them down more firmly if desired.

Attach the legs to the body. I attached mine along the bottom near the BLO round. The back of the legs were separated by 7 sts.

Attach the tail feathers. I attached mine between rounds 33 and 34 in the middle of the back.
